Welcome to Lewiston-Altura High School
Hello and welcome to Lewiston-Altura High School.
My name is Ryan Ihrke and I am the principal of Lewiston-Altura High School. I am very excited to be in my second year as principal here at LAHS! I grew up in the area, graduating from Plainview High School. After high school I studied a variety of topics, completing a 2 year degree in Music Business, my Bachelor's in English Literature with a Minor in History at the University of Minnesota, and eventually enrolled in a post-bachelor teacher licensure program with Winona State. I worked as an intern teacher for a year at Mayo High School in Rochester, taught two years of college level English and 9th grade writing at Pillager High School, and have spent the past four years teaching Senior Seminar, Journalism, and 10th grade English with a Reading focus, and working as the district's Data Management Coordinator at Triton High School.
My wife, Chloe, and I have 4 children: Sophia (10), Genevieve (5), Anthony (3), and Celine (1).
Our High School at Lewiston-Altura consists of a 7th & 8th grade middle school and a 9-12 high school. Our middle school works closely as a team to provide an approach designed for the specific needs of the middle level learner. Our high school is focused on preparing all of our students for the next step after high school and becoming productive members of society. We have a diverse option of curriculum offerings including a rigorous Project Lead the Way program, a hands on Ag program, AP courses, CLEP courses, Concurrent enrollments, Arts, Business, Music, Foreign Languages, and strong cores in English/Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
We are proud of the school spirit here at LAHS and the support our students have for one another and the community they live in. That pride in our community comes from the involvement of our parents and families as well as the support we receive from area businesses and backers.
Our students at LAHS are very involved in activities outside the classroom in the areas of Academics, Athletics, and the Arts. Some of these include HOSA, FFA, Speech, Drama, Math League, Knowledge Bowl, Super Mileage, Jazz Band, Yearbook, Athletics, and Student Council. We encourage all students to get involved in something they are interested in, as we believe being a part of a group outside the classroom encourages higher performance in the classroom and prepares them for success in life.
We have a strong staff here at LAHS that puts kids first while being willing to challenge themselves and continuously improve. Our teachers and support staff go out of their way to build relationships with students and help them prepare for the next step after school whether it be taking the ACT and going to a four year college, completing the Accuplacer and attending a two year institution, going to the military, or working in a trade or family business. Our small school and small class sizes allow us to know our students well and address their individual needs.
Some of our current goals as a staff include increasing potential college credits to be earned here at LAHS, teaching more 21st Century Skills, building literacy, increasing advanced level offerings, and providing great staff development. We are doing this with an involved leadership team, PLC’s, staff driven staff development teams, and a supportive school board that trusts the staff to lead the direction of our school.
